Where this data comes from
Unlike the rest of the tools on this site, this page cannot work offline — only a remote server can see what your public IP is, and only the registries know who a block belongs to. Three public sources are queried directly from your browser:- ipwho.is (fallback: ipapi.co) — returns your public IP plus estimated country, city, timezone, ASN, and ISP.
- rdap.org — the IANA RDAP bootstrap service, which redirects to the correct Regional Internet Registry (ARIN, RIPE NCC, APNIC, LACNIC, or AFRINIC) for the block. RDAP is the structured, modern replacement for port-43 whois.
- RDAP autnum lookup — the registry record for the AS number, which names the organization holding the AS.
Reading the results
- Geolocation country vs. registry country. These disagree more often than people expect. The registry country is where the block is registered; the geolocation country is where the addresses are believed to be used. A US-registered block routed to a European datacenter is completely normal, and so is a VPN or proxy showing a country you are not in.
- Registrant vs. abuse contact. The registrant is the organization the block is allocated to. The abuse contact is who to email about traffic coming from it — usually the right address for an incident report.
- Direct allocation vs. reassignment. A direct allocation comes straight from the RIR to the holder. A reassignment means an upstream provider handed the range to a customer, so the named organization may be the end user rather than the network operator.
- Private addresses (RFC 1918, CGNAT, loopback, link-local) have no public registration and no geolocation. They are flagged here rather than sent to a lookup service.
